Will my rates go up if I get a ticket? The answer to that question is, probably. Some of you may have already felt the pain of a rate increase due to a ticket. However, did you know that there are things you can do to help. In some States, they allow you to take a defensive driver class, online usually, and get that taken off. But in most cases there is going to be a charge if you get a speeding ticket, roll through a stop sign or get a ticket of any kind. And depending on what it is, the severity of it can also have an impact on how much your insurance rates go up.
I will point out one other thing is, some insurance companies today offer what is called accident forgiveness or violation forgiveness. So if you were to have a violation and you were paying a premium to have that on your policy, sometimes it’s a paid premium to have that, sometimes it’s an earn-in. So if you’ve been ticket free over X number of years and you get a random speeding ticket, they won’t actually raise your rates at renewal. So the answer is, probably, but make sure and check with your insurance agent to know how your policy would react to getting a ticket.
